DEVIZES' young car cruising community say residents and police should stop giving them a hard time.

The so-called boy racers - a term to which they object because some of their number are girls and they don't race each other - were reacting to a threat from police that their cars could be seized and possibly crushed if they indulge in anti-social behaviour.

A group of 25 met up with a reporter and photographer from the Gazette and Herald in Station Road car park on Monday to put their point of view.

Their spokesman was 24-year-old Ross Williamson. He said: "We invest every bit of what we earn in our cars. They are our pride and joy.

"We are not going to race around and risk damaging the vehicles we spend so much time and money making as good as we can.

"Our cars are all taxed, insured and MOT-ed and we never drink and drive. But if we meet up anywhere within five minutes the police are there and moving us on."

Car cruising has become increasingly popular as young people buy older cars and upgrade them with alloy wheels, chrome exhausts and sports seats.

But police throughout the region have come down hard on preventing mass cruising in places like Weston-super-Mare and it is becoming increasingly hard for young cruisers to find places to show off their vehicles.

All the cars that lined up at Station Road on Monday were impeccably turned out.

Residents in Station Road have complained that boy racers hurtle up and down the street late at night. There are also allegations of cars doing handbrake turns and doughnuts, where cars do tight spins, in the car park.

Mr Williamson said that this was highly unlikely. He said: "This would be physically impossible as you need to have a car with rear-wheel drive and I think there are only two rear-wheel drive cars in the group.

"We live in this town so we are not going to do anything to annoy people. But we have no power over drivers from other towns.

"The bloke involved in the crash in Long Street last week came from Melksham."

One of the many female members of the group, Beth Ireson, was incensed at the attitude of police and residents.

She said: "I used to have a Saxo VTS and the first time I drove it I got pulled over. The police officer wanted to do a random check for no apparent reason. Young people that drive nice cars have been given a bad name."

The group say they would value a meeting with town councillors to look into the possibility of creating an area where they can hang out and discuss their vehicles.

I'm 55 and when I passed my test aged 17, I did what these young people are doing now. Sorry to say girls and boys that I was also regularly pulled over by the police as you are now. This situation seems to be fueled though by an older generation who have forgoten what they did when they were young, or just didn't have a life and hate seeing young people enjoying themselves. Power to your elbows kids, have fun and drive safely.

well said Moby.
When Ford Capri's were all the rage the police were all over the yoof of the day.
A few years earlier it was the Mods and the Rockers on their bikes.
Things haven't changed and aren't likely to.
As long as there are young people having fun with their vehicles there will be old foaggies to moan to the law about it.
Keep on Trucking (as they used to say)

I take it that this is the same group of 25 drivers that sit on the forecourt of the London road garage, making it virtually impossible to park and then when moved on....go and sit in the focus car park...revving engines and keeping the locals awake?

Yeah, that'll be the ones Nico. Why would you want to park at London road garage, do you carry out your weekly shopping there?
If your having problems sleeping at night because of traffic noise, try closing your window!
Give these kids a break will you, they're not doing as much harm as a lot of the druged up wasters in this town!! We were all young once.
Get it on kids thats what i say, smoke the tyres!! big it up ennit!!

I hang out with these guys and girls and there are one or two who do mess around, admitted but then we all have to suffer just because 1 or 2 ruin it for everyone else. Most of us just enjoying meeting up in the evenings chatting etc, where is the harm in that? But we always seem to get moved on from EVERYWHERE even when there is no music or engines on.... work that out!

Can someone tell me how a chrome exhaust and sports seats "upgrade" a car? What these louts really want is to have "look at me" painted in huge letters on their cars. Grow up.

I have been down station road at night and all i hear is reving and wheel spining until 3am sometimes. If they young people of devizes want to rev cars etc until early hours go up roundway hill or something so people can sleep.

I have lost count of all the times residents at station road have told the youths reving cars etc in the car park to clear off due to family members or young children trying to sleep.

stfc you say

"have a little respect for us"

well have respect for the residents of station road and stop reving cars about at night until the early hours so no one can get to sleep.

Or next time im down there i will take a camera and record the youths in the car park reving around etc

I'm 24 so im a youngster 2 but the fact remains you lot shouldnt be reving round car parks in residential areas in the evenings or early hours of the morning.

How would u like it if someone did that outside your house while you were trying to sleep or had a young child there. You wouldnt

It's not picking on you its telling you straight show some respect for residents in the areas you go with your cars.

I admire the fact you lot spend your earned cash on your cars and there your pride and joy but disturbing the peace of residents just so you can rev about and show off your cars to your mates is guna end up with all ur spent cash in the junkyard when the police crush your cars for disturbing the peace as residents have already and will continue to complain bout the cars in the car park at night .

so if you dont want to see your earned cash and nice cars trashed show some respect for residents in the areas you decide to hang out.

What alot of rubbish in that article about its impossible to do certain things in station road car park with yer cars, i've seen and heard it being done whether its local lads or not and I for one will keep reporting it as and when I hear it, i'm sick to death as are many other residents down here of being kept awake till all hours of the morning by the constant noise, horns tooting and music blaring etc, that ain't showing off yer cars its being disrespectful idiots......

thats a load of rubbish just last nite i was driving back up station road when youths in the station road car park (from devizes) were racing behind me taking up both sides of the road. If i had not hit my breaks comming up to the single lane bit by the taxi rank the youths in a white car would have gone to overtaken me at speed and could of killed someone at that blind spot. next time im going to get registration numbers and let the police know of the incident. Racing around that areaat night can have serious concequences as the entrance to the "corny bin" is on that bend and people often hang around outside of it at night.

and the devizes lot cant say it isnt us or anyonein devizes i saw the cars of there mates there in the photo above and the people in the car are from devizes.

Ill make this clear -- drive sensibly and with respect for the residents or i will gather enough evidence for all of ya cars to be crushed by the police and thats a promise
